According to this article by National Geographic, NASA scientists are now predicting that recent projections about rising sea levels have been too conservative. In 2012, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) estimated that ocean levels would rise 28 to 98 centimeters by 2100. However, NASA scientists now estimate that the sea level could rise even further, potentially up to six meters. According to the scientists, the drastic difference between to the two estimations is due to the fact that the IPPC did not account for the effect of melting land ice. The melting of land ice such as the Jakobshavn glacier in Greenland that has enough water to raise sea levels by a foot is a serious issue. In order to understand the effects and causes of melting land ice, research programs such as Oceans Melting Greenland (OMG) are being established to study glaciers.
The melting of land ice is a serous issue. Researchers still do not fully understand how fast glaciers are melting from below. Hopefully, if the research programs are successful, scientists will be able to completely analyze the effects of melting glaciers on rising sea levels and perhaps even find a solution.
